BENEFITS OF A FUNCTIONAL CAPACITIES EVALUATION
A Functional Capacities Evaluation (FCE) is a thorough assessment of an individual's present physical abilities in areas of lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, dexterity and coordination, just to name a few. There are numerous procedures done for this testing and it can be beneficial to assist in rehabilitation programming. Objective signs, not subjective complaints, determine safe maximums. For instance, some signs we look at are muscle recruitment, cardiovascular response, movement patterns and base support.
Often the FCE is utilized at the time of "Maximum Medical Healing" for determinations of impairment and assisting in disability ratings. It can be done at any time during rehabilitation to assist the physician in determining physical abilities at that current time. Information obtained will be of benefit to the entire continuum of the rehabilitation team in the following ways:
THE PATIENT: provides the patient with his or her own limits or capabilities for safety in activities of daily living and for prevention of further injury; it can help a worker return to work with safe working limitations and the knowledge of what areas need to be improved upon. |
THE PHYSICIAN: provides objective information to assist with evaluation the medical impairments and completing impairment ratings; it provides data for establishing a safe physical demand classification for return to work. |
THE COMPENSATION CARRIER: provides useful information in a comprehensive report; validates the injury and resultant deficiencies, if any; can assist to reduce time-loss from work by identifying the rehabilitation needs if done early in rehabilitation; finally, it can be used to assist in establishment of a disability settlement. |
THE VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SPECIALIST: assists in determining if the patient can return to their job of injury or if it needs modification; provides data for job modifications or if alternatives for return to work need to be explored. |
THE ATTORNEY: provides objective data for the establishment of settlements and disabilities using the Department of Labor's Physical Demand Classification. |
Mountain View Physical Therapy utilizes the Isernhagen Work System for standardized, proven methods of testing. Twenty-nine different measures of function are evaluated with dynamic testing over a two day period to improve reliability of results. The report will include any restrictions and appropriate recommendations as related to the patient's needs to maximize function. Providers must be certified to ensure the highest level of competency and safety with testing.
